IELPO vibrates with the EMC2!
The University of Barcelona's Master of Laws in International Economic Law and Policy (IELPO LL.M.), a sponsor to the 10th Edition of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (EMC2), participated actively in the All-American Regional Round in Washington, D.C. (United States), and in the ELSA Rounds taking place in Maastricht (The Netherlands) and Muenster (Germany).
The EMC2 consists of a WTO panel procedure based on a hypothetical case for which teams should prepare written submissions supporting their claims both as complainant and respondent. In addition, students should prepare an oral presentation developing the arguments supporting their claims (with the respective rebuttal and sur-rebuttal). The EMC2 is first developed in Regional Rounds taking place at different regions of the world (two ELSA Rounds in Europe, and two non-ELSA Rounds in Latin America, North-America Round and Asia-Pacific, in addition to an International Written Round). The winning teams of each round then proceed to the Final Oral Round, held this year in Montpellier, France, from the 5th to the 13th of May, 2012.
This year the case consisted of a case brought by Arachland alleging that Zeltonia, a country imposing safeguard measures and countervailing duties targeting eco-friendly cement, acted inconsistently with its WTO obligations.
Before the announcement of the semi-finalists in each round, Ms. Altagracia Cuevas, the IELPO Coordinator, made a presentation highlighting the key role that former EMC2 participants play in the IELPO LL.M. Program and their contribution to maintaining the Program's quality and excellence. This presentation also consisted of a video which showed many successful stories starred by numerous former EMC2 Participants who have found their paths right after their studies in Barcelona, taking into account that IELPO has only four years of existence.
The IELPO Award, which consists of a voucher to be used as tuition waiver for either the LL.M. Program or the IELPO à la Carte Specialized Courses, was given to the Winning Team, the Runner-up team and the Best Orator of the Preliminary Rounds.
