Within the Distinguished Guest Lecture Series, IELPO had the pleasure of having Mr. Bohanes today presenting his recent paper on the Standard of Review in WTO Dispute Settlement.
Mr. Bohanes is an associate in the firm's Geneva office where he practices with the International Trade and Arbitration group. He joined the firm in 2006. Mr. Bohanes advises businesses, trade associations, and governments on international trade law with a particular focus on WTO law. In particular, he counsels clients on WTO negotiations as well as on various stages of WTO dispute settlement from developing a case to securing effective implementation.
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Bohanes served for almost four years as a Legal Affairs Officer at the Appellate Body Secretariat of the World Trade Organization where he counseled the Appellate Body Members in numerous appeals and related matters under a wide range of WTO agreements, including the GATT and the agreements on Agriculture, Subsidies, Anti-Dumping, Safeguards, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures as well as Technical Barriers to Trade. He also counseled Appellate Body Members acting as arbitrators to determine deadlines for WTO Member Governments to comply with WTO judgments. He also worked in the Legal Affairs Division of the WTO Secretariat, assisting with the preparation of the WTO Analytical Index. Mr. Bohanes has also provided technical assistance on WTO law to government officials of many WTO Members. In 2002 he spent five months with the Trade Law Centre for Southern Africa, mainly advising the Government of Mozambique on a reform project concerning the trade dispute resolution mechanism in the Southern African Development Community.
Mr. Bohanes speaks English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Czech and has a basic knowledge of Italian and Russian. He has provided technical assistance in English and Spanish and has lectured on WTO law in addition in French and Portuguese.
