Alejandro Patiño

Alejandro Patiño Cruz is from Costa Rica. He got his Master Degree in European Union (Cum laude) from the Real Instituto de Estudios Europeos de Zaragoza (Fundación Carolina Scholarship) in 2008. Two years before, he obtained his Law Degree with honors at the Escuela Libre de Derecho University in Costa Rica, 2006. In addition, he has advanced studies in International Relations from the Universidad Latina of Costa Rica. (2003). He is currently enrolled at the University of Barcelona's Master of Laws in International Economic Law and Policy Program (IELPO). (Fundación Carolina Scholarship).

In order to obtain his Law Degree, Alejandro did his final thesis on "Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in the DR-CAFTA and WTO Agreements: Risk and Opportunities to Central America and the USA in the Choice of Forum" (Original Paper drafted in Spanish, which got special mention and recommendation to be published). For obtaining his Master degree, he did his thesis on "Dispute Settlement Mechanisms in WTO Agreements and in Economic Partnership Agreements in Latin America: Perspectives for the EU-Central America Agreement and Regional Coordination in the Choice of Forum, which was awarded with the mention Ministry of Foreign Affairs "Francisco Fernández Ordoñez" as the best thesis of the 2008 promotion, publication scheduled for December 2010.

Regarding his working experience, Alejandro has been an intern at the Inter-American Development Bank (2005). He worked as a Legal-Political and Public Affairs advisor of the Embassy of Japan in Costa Rica (2005-2007). Additionally, since 2008 until September 2010, Alejandro worked as a Representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) San José, Costa Rica office, covering the Central American region.

As part of his work and complementary activities, he has published several opinion articles in Costa Rican and Japanese newspapers on the Central American market, the independence of Kosovo and European Union activities. In the framework of JETRO activities, he has participated as a speaker in different conferences and seminars on the Japanese Market in Central America and he has made several works and academic trips to Brussels, Luxembourg, Madrid, Strasbourg and Tokyo, Japan. As part of his experience as a volunteer, since 2002 and during Costa Rican period of presidential elections, he was working as an electoral adviser of the Costa Rican Supreme Electoral Tribunal. He is a member of the Costa Rican Bar Association since 2007.

Alejandro speaks Spanish and English. He is studying French and Polish.
