Elena Tonenkova comes from Cheboksary, Russia. She graduated from Higher School of Economics, Moscow, as an economist with specialization in Trade Policy.
The choice of the specialization was influenced by the accession of the Russian Federation to the WTO. During her studies Elena’s area of interest was the WTO Dispute Settlement System. As part of a team she participated in a regional round of the ELSA Moot Court competition that was carried out in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Elena’s practical experience started with an internship at the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Geneva, Switzerland, and continued with a consultancy position with the focus on capacity building for developing and least developed countries. Back in Moscow Elena worked as a researcher on the Impact Assessment practices in the EU, USA and Australia. She then got a position at the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation specializing on the WTO Doha Development Agenda issues and working with the WTO, APEC, BRICS, G20 and OECD. She was selected for the WTO Regional Trade Policy Course, Istanbul, which she completed with distinction.
Elena’s mother tongue is Russian and she is fluent in English and intermediate in Spanish.
She was awarded with the ELSA Scholarship to pursue the IELPO LL.M. Programme.
