Maria Isabel da Cunha Mathias was born in São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating from Law School in 1994, she became a contracts specialist in 2006 and a Master in Consumer Law in 2010, both at PUC/SP (Pontifical Catholic University, São Paulo). She worked in São Paulo as a lawyer since her graduation for twenty years, in civil and labour litigation, and after spending a year and a half abroad she turned her focus to consulting. As an associate for mid-sized and large law firms, she practiced civil, consumer and administrative regulatory law, and for the past twelve years she worked as a legal advisor for Itaú Unibanco, one of Brazil’s most important private banks, dealing with contracts, retail banking, credit cards and asset management. Maria Isabel is a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese and is fluent in English.
She also speaks Spanish, at an intermediate level, and Italian and French, at a basic level. Joining the 2015 IELPO LL.M. programme was her first step towards the International career she has decided to pursue.
