Oscar McGown-Withers was born in 1991 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed a Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree at Rhodes University in 2012. Oscar double majored in Economics and Law, and received a first class pass for International Trade Theory Economics. Oscar continued on at Rhodes University to complete a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in 2014. During his LL.B Oscar took a particular interest in International Trade Law and received a first class pass for his research thesis on WTO Law.
During his final year at Rhodes, Oscar was selected to compete on the Rhodes University team for the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law. The team won the First-ever African Regional Round and Oscar won ‘Best Orator of the Grand Final’. He also received the highest individual oration score of the competition. The team then went on to compete in the final of the competition in Geneva where they ultimately ranked 14th in the world.
After university Oscar completed a six month internship at Social Surveys Africa – a social research company specialising in development research. Oscar then went on to complete a two month internship at Nortons Incorporated – a leading, boutique, competition law firm in Johannesburg, South Africa.
It was this combination of experiences which piqued Oscar’s passion for International Economic Law and compelled him to apply for the IELPO LL.M in International Economic Law and Policy. Oscar was admitted to the programme on a full academic scholarship.
