Tilahun Esmael Kassahun was born on Oct 23, 1986 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Tilahun joined Haramaya University College of Law (the second oldest university in Ethiopia) and read law for four years from where he graduated with a cumulative grade point average of 3.83, making it one of the highest scores in the college’s history. Immediately after his graduation, Tilahun has worked as an assistant legal expert in Ethiopian Justice and Legal System Research Institute. Shortly after, Tilahun was recruited by his College and has served as a Graduate Assistant (2008-2009) and an Assistant Lecturer (2009-2011). In his stay at Haramaya University College of Law, Tilahun has been able of teach various business and economic law courses such as International Trade Law, Law of Public Finance. Tax Law, Investment Law, Law of Patents and Technology Transfer.
Between 2009 and 2010 Tilahun has followed a one year long advanced training in International Economic and WTO Law with a Geneva based advisory group and affiliate of the World Trade Institute, WTI Advisors. In 2011 Tilahun Joined Addis Ababa University, School of Law and studied his LL.M in Business Law where he scored a CGPA of 3.94. Tilahun has also done his LL.M. thesis on a highly demanding and currently pertinent topic, Trade Facilitation. Parallel to his studies, Tilahun was able to get himself in to the prestigious Addis Ababa University School of Law faculty and has thought courses such as International Trade Law, Investment Law, Appellate Advocacy, and Current Legal Topics.
Tilahun has also worked in an extensive internship program with the USAID WTO Accession Plus Project supporting Ethiopia’s WTO accession efforts. Since January 2012 Tilahun is giving a free professional support to the Trade Negotiation Directorate and Ethiopia’s WTO Accession Technical Team at the Ministry of Trade, Ethiopia.
Tilahun’s research interests are international trade and WTO law, in particular services trade, investment law and intellectual properties. In particular Tilahun has published papers on WTO SPS Agreement and Developing countries and Ethiopia’s WTO Accession. In July 2010 Tilahun has also been able to present a paper in the Second Biannual conference of the Society of Economic Lawyers held in Barcelona, Spain. Other papers on WTO Accession and Financial Services Liberalization and Trade Marks Law have been accepted to publication in various journals. In so doing Tilahun considers that the broad topics of International Economic Law demand further exploration and thus considers his engagement in the prestigious IELPO program to be an ideal opportunity to deepen and diversify his professional carrier in the area.
